We were thrilled to play a part in celebrating the best in the industry at the recent UK Bus Awards as sponsors of the Supporting the Environment award.
The recent UK Bus Awards celebrated the best and brightest in the industry and we were proud to be involved in this year’s ceremony as a sponsor of the Supporting the Environment Award. It was even better for us to join the finalists and enjoy the celebratory air at the first in-person UK Bus Awards ceremony since 2019!
The awards, which were founded in 1993, aim to recognize, reward, and inspire excellence in the UK bus industry, and our participation in the awards underlines our determination to help the sector become as clean and green as possible.
As our vision is to reduce global emissions from transport, we were thrilled to support this year's Supporting the Environment award and recognize some of the projects that are propelling the bus industry toward a Net Zero future.
Supporting the Environment Award Winners
During the ceremony held at Troxy, London, CitySwift Co-founder and Chief Operating Officer Alan Farrelly opened the envelope and revealed the winners of the Gold, Silver, and Bronze Awards in the category.
Stagecoach East took home the Gold Award for its highly innovative ‘Big Switch Off’ campaign. It encourages the operator's colleagues to turn off all non-essential electrical equipment to reduce power consumption and carbon emissions.
Over Christmas Day and Boxing Day last year, the company reduced its electrical emissions to 29% of the previous year, saving over a thousand-kilowatt hour of electricity in just two days!
Building on that success, various other initiatives such as Switch Off for the Weekend, have continued to reduce Stagecoach East’s carbon emissions to what it expects will be a significant saving by the end of the year.
Like the judges, we loved this entry for its simplicity and effectiveness. It’s something that every bus depot and operating base throughout the UK could be doing. It not only reduces the carbon footprint of the industry, but in these days of high energy prices, saves money too.
The Silver Award was won by First Glasgow for its project to electrify the fleet based at its vast Caledonia bus depot. It’s a mightily impressive scheme and the judges were impressed by its sheer scale, which will create the UK’s largest DC rapid charging hub.
Finally, the Bronze Award was won by First York for its skill in introducing the biggest zero-emission park-and-ride fleet in the UK. It’s a project that marks the culmination of a three-year development partnership between the operator and manufacturer Switch Mobility.
A huge congratulations to everyone involved in these projects! They demonstrate just how we can all work together to reduce global emissions from transport, support public transport networks and attract more people to choose public transportation over private car use.
